She always presented a smile despite her tragic life. She’d been forced to dance and abused by her father from a young age. That seemed to be the love she thought she deserved when she tried to find a husband. Eddie Judson was a cruel manager, to say nothing of his qualities as a life partner. He got her many of her most famous roles, including the one she’s most known for, Gilda. That came at the cost of being visually transformed to look less Latin and pimped out to the Hollywood elite.
Orson Wells was the “great love of her life,” but he expected the type of sensual creature he saw on screen. The real Rita was shy and calm. He didn’t want to be tied down to her, and they eventually parted despite having a child together.
She even attracted royalty like Aly Khan. He won her over with gifts, but she left him when it turned out he truly was the biggest playboy in Europe. Rita was fighting her own battles when she helped Dick Hames with his financial struggles. That only lasted for a bit until he publicly struck her in the face and she divorced him.
Her final marriage to James Hill came soon before her death from Alzheimer's. He wanted to stay in the movie business, but she wanted to get out. Her behavior became erratic and unpredictable until the world lost a shining star on October 17, 1987. She’s both a tragic example of a woman who only got involved with cruel men and an inspirational one of a lady who stood up for herself when enough was enough.
