James Garner was a television actor that was best known for his turns on the series Maverick and The Rockford Files. On Maverick, James played the character of card player Bret Maverick. On The Rockford Files, he played a private detective by the name of Jim Rockford. According to James, both of these characters were essentially the same person. This is perhaps why James was perfect at playing both characters and also why they were both successful.

Although television audiences may best remember James for the iconic characters that he played on those aforementioned shows, his two daughters best remember him as a loving father. James took special care to show his kids, including his biological daughter Gigi, a much better childhood than he experienced growing up. James and his two siblings had suffered great abuse at the hands of their alcoholic father after the death of their mother and also suffered abuse from their stepmother after their father remarried. With that said, James was able to put his differences with his father aside later on in life, working with him laying carpet after serving for a time in the Korean War.
A few years after serving in the Korean War, James eventually became a Hollywood star. It was around this time period that James got married, and subsequently started his family. James’ one and only wife during his lifetime was Lois Clarke, and he died by her side. After James and Lois got married, James adopted Lois’ daughter from a previous marriage.
