She had just lost a role in Nashville when an opportunity to act in a new film called One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest came her way. She saw it as an expression of the major political issues of the day and was glad to be a part of it.
The team created the character from the ground up to give her as much depth as possible. It was Louise’s idea to make her a virginal woman obsessed with power and control who always believed she was in the right. A celebrity hairstylist helped create her image, including the iconic pageboy haircut. Director Milos Forman helped ensure Nurse Ratched was intimidating enough.
These facets came together to create an iconic film villain.
The set of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest was plagued with parties and weird goings-on, and Louise stayed in her own room to avoid them and stay in character.
The film became a major box-office success. It was also a hit with critics and fans, earning a staggering number of awards.
Portraying Nurse Ratched earned Louise an unexpected Oscar for Best Actress. She began her speech with a few light jokes about how the audience loved to hate her but ended it with a touching sign language tribute to her parents. The moment is still one of the most memorable in awards show history.
Actors and actresses tend to get typecast after memorable performances, and this happened to Louise as well. She’s not one to turn down a role but was somewhat distraught when she wasn’t allowed to add much humanity to her character in Flowers in the Attic like she had with One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
Louise Fletcher can no longer bear to watch the movie that made her famous, but no one can deny what it did for her career or how important her performance was to its enduring success.
