Robert was a relative unknown when he tested for the part of the Sundance Kid. The studio was hoping for a bigger name star, such as Steve McQueen or Marlon Brando. However, Paul was so impressed by young Robert’s work that he stuck his neck out to ensure that the studio hired him instead. Paul’s instinct prevailed, as the film became a massive success both critically and commercially. As well, Robert appreciated Paul sticking his neck out for him for the rest of his life, and it’s part of why the two bonded so well.
After Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was released, Robert and Paul became Connecticut neighbors. Paul had already lived in the state, and Robert moved out to join him. The two lived less than a mile apart and spent much of their days together drinking beers and smoking cigarettes. Their follow-up feature was 1973’s The Sting, which went on to become an even bigger hit than their first film together.
Since Robert and Paul were such great friends and their first two films together were such massive hits, many have questioned why the two never reunited on the screen after The Sting. Join Facts Verse as we explore the truth about Robert Redford and Paul Newman’s relationship.
