Katharine was born at the turn of the 20th century and developed an interest in acting while attending college. During her college days, she played the roles of men in many stage plays. She made her debut on the big screen in 1932, acting in a film by famous homosexual director George Cukor. Following this, Katharine’s took an acclaimed role in a 1933 film from lesbian director Dorothy Arzner.
Soon into Katharine’s Hollywood career, rumors began to circulate about the woman due to some of her idiosyncrasies. Katharine was an early adopter of pants in the days when women traditionally only wore dresses. As well, Katharine made special care to stay out of the limelight when it came to interviews and press, something that made her stand out amongst many of her contemporaries.
Katharine was only married once in her lifetime, and for a brief period. The actress had no children before her death. Besides her first and only husband, Katharine was also said to have been romantically involved with actor Spencer Tracy. However, recent revelations have called this romantic relationship into question.
