Elizabeth had been born in London, England, though her parents were Americans. They were working as art dealers and happened to be in London at the time that Elizabeth's mother went into labor. When World War II started, the family fled to the United States and took up living in Los Angeles, California. It was here that Elizabeth began screen testing for Hollywood roles and made her debut in 1942.

After acting in numerous films as a child star, Elizabeth turned in a more mature performance at the age of 18, acting alongside Spencer Tracy in the 1950’s Father of the Bride. From there, Elizabeth became an even bigger star in her adult years than she had been as a kid and was eventually known as much for her torrid love affairs and rocky marriages as she was for her raw performances.
