Not many know that Ron Howard started his rise to stardom as the character 'Opie Taylor', the son of 'Sheriff Andy Taylor' on the American comedy series, The Andy Griffith Show, at only six years old.
The CBS show, which started out in black and white, was such a hit garnering millions of viewers who tuned in every week from 1960 to 1968.
The Andy Griffith Show launched Howard into the spotlight, but success came at a price for the young actor. Although Howard was wildly popular among adults, his fame on the show meant he was bullied at school.
However, the young Ron was resilient. He was born into a showbiz family; his mom Jean Speegle Howard was an actress, and his dad Rance Howard, a director, writer, and actor, so he had the much-needed support and understanding around him.
Having to be quiet around his peers and lay low for fear of retaliation was one of the reasons why he was attracted to directing because he viewed it as the most social job.
It wasn't long before the now 67-year-old Howard was directing his first movie at 15 years old. The 3-minute film called Deed of Derring-Do sees Ron starring alongside his brother Clint as a gunfighter.
Howard went on to direct big-hitting movies such as Backdraft, The Da Vinci Code, A Beautiful Mind, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas, to name but a few.
To date, Ron Howard has won two Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Picture for A Beautiful Mind, four Emmys, a Grammy, and two Golden Globe awards from his over 100 nominations.
Thankfully the bullying that Howard faced as a child did not discourage him from continuing his onward and upward career to become one of the greatest directors of our time.
His tenacity is such an inspiration.
