Could you imagine spending your life in an iron lung, and do you think you’d be able to get a law degree if you were in that awful position? This is the life of Paul Alexander, better known as “Polio Paul”. After being diagnosed with polio at the age of six, Paul was confined to an iron lung permanently and many thought that he was doomed to the fate of watching television for the rest of his life. Besides Polio Paul, the other person still currently utilizing the antiquated ventilator colloquially referred to as an “iron lung” to survive is Martha Lillard, who was diagnosed with polio when she was five. Martha was confined to an iron lung for a period of several months, and still continues to have to sleep in one. While Martha has been offered more modern forms of ventilation as an alternative to the antiquated iron lung, she says she likes the older device better.

Although Paul and Martha continue to utilize their iron lungs, the out-moded ventilators are no longer in production due to the fact that more efficient means of ventilation have been developed in the days since. However, Paul and Martha continue to use theirs for whatever reason. Martha has shared that she has an incredibly hard time finding spare parts for her iron lung, as parts for the machines are no longer being manufactured.
