Nearly two decades after his death, Rodney Dangerfield remains one of the most recognizable and famous comedians of all time. Perched halfway between nostalgic comedians like George Burns and edgier alternative comedians like Andy Kaufman, Rodney rose to unlikely superstardom during his 40s after years of trying to make it as a comedian. Rodney had already retired for a period of time before finding success in his later years.

Rodney had a troubled upbringing. His father was a vaudeville performer and was rarely around. When Rodney was still a child, his parents separated. His mother didn't pay much attention to him, instead of focusing most of her attention on grooming his older sister for a career in show business herself. Little did Rodney’s mom know that Rodney was going to be the one to become the famous figure!
Growing up during the Great Depression and coming from a broken home, Rodney started experiencing a good deal of disrespect at an early age. However, he didn’t come up with the iconic tagline “I don’t get no respect” until many years later, after giving up on show business for a time. Rodney first started writing jokes at the age of 15 before making his official entrance into stand-up comedy at the age of 19.
During his early years as a stand-up comedian, Rodney met his first wife, and they started a family together. Rodney ended up retiring to support them, though he eventually came back to the comedy scene with a new look and an intentionally pathetic demeanor that was inspired by the comedian’s troubled life.
