Virginia Mayo began her career as a chorus girl in New York City and landed her first film role in the 1943 movie "Jack London." She went on to appear in over 40 films, including "White Heat," "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty," and "The Best Years of Our Lives." She often played the role of the attractive leading lady or the sultry femme fatale.

In the 1950s, Virginia Mayo became a popular pin-up girl and was frequently featured in magazines such as "Esquire" and "Life." She also starred in a number of Western films, including "Colorado Territory" and "The Silver Whip."

Virginia Mayo's career declined in the 1960s as she aged and Hollywood's interest in her waned. She continued to act in films and television shows, but her roles became smaller and less frequent. She made her last film appearance in the 1990 movie "The Man in the Moon."

Virginia Mayo was married to Michael O'Shea, an actor, and comedian, from 1947 until his death in 1973. They had one daughter together.

Outside of her acting career, Virginia Mayo was involved in a number of charitable organizations, including the United Cerebral Palsy Foundation and the Motion Picture and Television Fund.

Virginia Mayo passed away on January 17, 2005, at the age of 84, due to pneumonia.
