The rural sitcom's briefly enjoyed a heydey back in the mid-20th century, but they would eventually fall out of popularity and wind up on the network chopping block, in a historic event that would go down in history as 'the rural purge'.

In the 1960s Paul Henning was one of the most successful television show creators around. He breathed life into several highly influential sitcoms that gave American's a glimpse into a highly fictionalized incarnation of rural living. The Beverly Hillbillies was his first venture into back-country America. A year after that series hit the small screen, Henning created the CBS sitcom Petticoat Junction.

The series aired on the network from September of 1963 to April 1970 and ran for 222 episodes spanning 7 seasons. The show took place at the Shady Rest Hotel, a humble little family-owned establishment ran by widowed Kate Bradley and her three lovely daughters, Betty Jo, Billie Jo, and Bobbie Jo, and her lazy but lovable uncle Joe Carson who was always coming up with half-baked get rich schemes.

While it might not have been the most high-brow offering on TV at the time, Petticoat Junction still managed to perform quite well in the ratings and has since gone down in history as being a comedy that inspired countless others.

In this video, we'll be taking a revealing look at what was really going on behind the scenes during the production of the iconic show. Some of the details we're about to discuss are seldom ever discussed, but they certainly should be.
