Montgomery Clift was born in 1920 and raised by an adopted mother with a family fortune. This meant that the future star had a fairly upscale upbringing. During the Great Depression, his adoptive mother lost the majority of her fortune. Still, the family didn’t want much. Montgomery had two siblings, and they both went to college. However, Montgomery had other plans. The burgeoning star made his debut on Broadway at the age of 15. Within a period of ten years, the actor began appearing in films.

While most stars signed long-term contracts with studios around the time that Montgomery came into the entertainment industry, the actor had other ideas. Montgomery never signed a long-term contract, with the actor instead using his success on Broadway to garner roles of his choosing. The performer was selective about roles, only appearing in films he deemed worthy.

Montgomery’s unique career choices paid off, with one of the actor’s first gigantic successes being 1951’s A Place in the Sun. The film saw Montgomery grace the screen alongside Elizabeth Taylor, and the two were dubbed the most attractive couple to have ever graced the screen. Sadly, a car accident that Montgomery suffered during his and Elizabeth’s second film together would alter the actor’s looks forever.
