Jackie Coogan was born to a family of vaudeville performers, and he got his very first acting gig before he was even two years old. At the age of five, Jackie began performing alongside his parents in their vaudeville troupe. This is how the young performer caught the attention of Charlie Chaplin. Charlie liked Jackie’s vaudeville spirit, and he ended up casting him in a number of projects. The most notable of these projects was 1921’s The Kid, which featured Jackie in the titular role. The success of The Kid led to Jackie becoming one of the biggest draws of the 1920s box office.
As a result of his childhood successes, Jackie Coogan has amassed millions of dollars by the time of his coming of age. However, he wouldn’t end up seeing much of this money for himself. Jackie’s father passed away, leaving his mother to remarry the child star’s business manager. Jackie’s mother and his new stepdad then passed along the devastating news that they had no intention of sharing any of the fortune that Jackie had amassed during his child-star days.
When Jackie learned that his mother was stealing all of his money, he took her and his new stepdad to court. Jackie only got around $100,000 of the millions that he was arguably owed, but the lawsuit did lead to the creation of a law put in place to protect child performers.
