This legendary Canadian actor (and yes, he’s not Scottish, despite the accent in Star Trek) had a long and distinguished career playing one of science fiction's most beloved characters. And if you sensed a real heroic nature to Scotty or any other of the characters he played, you shouldn’t be surprised. That’s because Doohan was a real-life war hero, having served in the Royal Canadian Army during World War II. Doohan was one of many thousands of soldiers involved in the invasion of Normandy on the coast of France on “D-Day.” While many soldiers on both sides lost their lives that fateful day, Doohan managed to make it through. He and his Canadian brethren made it out of the water, through the mine-filled beaches, and past the German soldiers waiting past the beach, and securing the area they were tasked with fighting for. But, like many soldiers that day, Doohan didn’t make it through unscathed. He was mistaken by a gunner on his side for an approaching German soldier and was subsequently shot 6 times.
Miraculously, he managed to survive the ordeal, thanks in large part to a silver cigarette case he had put in his shirt pocket, that deflect4ed one of the bullets away from his heart. But one of the bullets blew his middle finger clean off, a wound that was apparent for the rest of his days. And while Doohan was far from embarrassed by that war injury, he was cognizant of how it potentially looked on screen and made every attempt to hide it.
