Barbara Eden was born in Tucson, Arizona, to a simple middle-class family. Her mother eventually divorced her father and the family emigrated to San Francisco. Her mother remarried a telephone lineman and Barbara grew up entirely in California. Her family struggled to survive having been hit immensely by the Great Depression.
But even with these struggles, the family still managed to keep a positive outlook on life. Barbara’s mother Alice would teach her children how to sing and it seemed that Barbara soon took a shining to singing and entertaining others.
During her teens, she began singing in nightclubs and earned a decent side income to help her parents. She decided to take the next step and pursue an acting career. She joined an actor’s union while still in her teens and decided this should be the main focus of her career.
She won the role of Jeannie in I Dream of Jeannie in the 1960s and this was the show that made her a star. She played the role in over 100 episodes across 5 seasons. She inspired a generation of actresses with her memorable performance in the sitcom.
