Baby African ostriches hatched at one of the world's oldest zoos in Austria.
Footage shows the egg being taken from an incubator before a small hole was drilled at the top of Schonbrunn Zoo.
The shells were then carefully peeled off from the sides of the egg, and the chicks were allowed to roam in their grassy enclosures.
Zoo director Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck said: 'The North African red-necked ostrich has resided in our zoo since 2021.'
With only a mere estimate of 1,000 individuals remaining in the wild, primarily inhabiting the Republic of Chad in Central Africa, the North African red-necked ostrich faces the looming threat of extinction due to poaching and habitat destruction.
But curator Folko Balfanz had seen the successful hatching of the ostrich eggs using a meticulous process.
Falko said: 'Maintaining a constant temperature of around 36 degrees Celsius and precise humidity levels of 20 to 25 per cent for 42 days, alongside regular egg rotation, presented significant challenges.'
Zoo visitors can watch the newborn chicks adorned in their grey-brown plumage, and explore the outdoor area in the historic section of the zoo.
While the distinctive long neck of ostriches is already apparent in the young, they have yet to develop the striking red colouring that distinguishes them as adults.
Stephan added: 'The rapid growth of these chicks, up to three centimetres per day, is truly remarkable. However, they have much to learn and consume before reaching the impressive stature of their parents, with adult males weighing up to 150kg.'
Despite their substantial size, ostriches are renowned for their remarkable speed, capable of reaching up to 70 km/h when running.
