Eddie Albert Heimberger was born on April 22, 1906, and he was the eldest of five kids. He got his start in the workforce as a paperboy at the tender age of six in Minnesota, where he was born and reared. Albert dabbled with business after graduating from the University of Minnesota with a business degree. However, the 1929 stock market crisis made it nearly impossible for him to advance. Albert was a multitalented gentleman who got by on his trapeze act, insurance sales, and nightclub singing. In 1933, he and another man, Grace, co-hosted the radio show The Honeymooners from New York. Almost immediately after that, he began performing on Broadway and in television shows. In 1938, with the release of his debut feature picture, "Brother Rat," Albert made his way to Hollywood. In 1942, he enlisted in the Navy.

Eddie Albert, a recent Navy recruit, served on the Sheridan as a salvage officer instead of a marine at Tarawa. Eddie Albert began his career in Hollywood in the late 1930s after working as a spy for the United States government, investigating Nazi operations in Mexico. He then served in the Coast Guard during World War II. He was active in the military during the 1950s when he made numerous film appearances.

Before making the jump to television, he had roles in films like Roman Holiday, The Sun Also Rises, and Oklahoma!, but he never ceased thinking of himself as a film actor. Eddie married Mexican actress Margo in 1945. There were also those who judged Margo harshly because of her alleged affiliation with the American Communist Party. Both Margo and Eddie were included in the pamphlet Red Channels, which tried to expose communist inclinations. They had a son named Edward Jr. and then adopted a daughter named Maria.
