A freediver captured incredible up-close footage of a pod of socialising whales in the Indian Ocean. Not only was he just a few metres away from the marine mammals, he could also feel the whales' echolocation.

The filmer told Newsflare: "While freediving in the deep open sea, I came across a group of whales that looked like they were about to start to socialise. A behaviour where they communicate with each other, rub and caress one another and strengthen bonds between each other.

"I followed them till they slowed and indeed they were socialising.
They formed a beautiful almost circular pattern as they communicated and played with one another.

"The clicking sound by which they communicate resonated from within my whole body, from my chest through to my spine. It was gentle and I felt like I was part of the group despite being a species of another kind.

"I did not feel threatened, I have been on close proximity of these whales for a few years and never once felt threatened. I just wanted to stay as long as I could in this moment.

"Well and truly one of the most if not most unforgettable moments in my life."
