Are you a devoted Elvis fan? If you are, you may have seen one of his most serious and least successful films; Flaming Star. Based on a novel by Clare Huffaker, it told the story of a half-Kiowa man named Pacer who gets caught up in a war between his town and the neighboring tribe.
Elvis got picked up for the part after returning from the military. He was in the best shape of his life and it showed in the film’s more intense scenes.

Early promotional material for Flaming Star promised more songs than were delivered in the final product. 2 survived; the title track and a jaunty folk song called Cane and a High-Stretched Collar. The other 2 that were filmed got laughed off screen in previews and were eventually cut. Critics loved the movie, but fans expected a lighthearted musical and didn’t appreciate the bait-and-switch when they saw a serious period piece. G.I. Blues, released around the same time, earned several times more money. It showed studios that the meaty pieces Elvis wanted to be in weren’t profitable.

Barbara loved working with the King and thought he gave his best performance in Flaming Star. Her explanation for why it ‘didn't’ make a penny” is that it didn’t have the number of songs fans were expecting. Flaming Star spawned a series of art by Andy Warhol and earned a spot on the British Film Institute’s list of 100 Essential Westerns in 1980. It got Elvis inducted into the Los Angeles Indian Tribal Council, and its message of racial tolerance was so powerful that it was banned in several countries.
