She sadly died in 1999 at the young age of 37. Yet, in this short lifespan, she managed to make an incredible impact in the world of independent cinema.
As an actress, she’s perhaps best known for her role in the Abel Ferrara film Ms. 45. In the film, she played a mute seamstress who gets raped twice a day.
She fights off her second rapist and manages to take his gun – a Colt. 45. She then goes on a killing spree against men who mistreat women. The film was a huge hit among the independent film circuit and is seen as a cult film today.
With the film, Zoë Lund became known as a symbol for female empowerment. But for her, the film wasn’t just about acting. She felt that cinema gave her an outlet to express her political, religious, and social views.
A few years later, she co-wrote the film Bad Lieutenant with Abel Ferrara. This film is known as one of the best American crime films of the 90s and shows that Zoë Lund had talents both in front of and behind the camera.
Much of her career was dedicated to acting in B-movies but her talents went way beyond this. She wrote screenplays, appeared in documentaries, and was an accomplished essayist, poet, short story writer, and novelist.
