She spent much of her childhood watching movies, spending much of her time at local cinemas. No doubt she dreamt of one day seeing herself on the big screen.
In the late 1940s, the retired MGM actress Norma Shearer saw a picture of Janet at the ski resort where her parents worked. She arranged for Janet to attend a screen test for the film The Romance of Rosy Ridge.
The film helped launch Janet Leigh's career, and she soon started regularly acting in major Hollywood films. Before she knew it, she became a Hollywood starlet!
Janet Leigh’s life beyond the screen was also fascinating. Did you know that her first marriage was at the age of 15, much before her marriage to Tony Curtis?
What about her famous role in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho? Was she proud of the role? She certainly was, but the role also scarred her. For years she decided to not take showers anymore and opted for baths instead. She would also ensure that the bathroom door and windows were locked – perhaps to prevent any real-life Norman Bates coming in!

Of course, Janet Leigh was also the mother of Jamie Lee Curtis – an accomplished actress in her own right and one who also made strides in the horror movie genre.
Janet Leigh passed away in 2004 but she remains an icon of American cinema. No doubt future generations of cinephiles will continue to discover her work.
