The show touched millions of people not only while it was airing but many generations after it aired due to its re-runs remaining immensely popular throughout the decades. The show ended number one in the ratings and is only one of three shows on television to have ever finished at number one in its final season. In the video, you'll learn why some of the cast members quit the show.

After the series's fifth season, fan favorite Don Knotts left the show and described leaving as an extremely tough decision for him. Don enjoyed stardom and a great career even after the Andy Griffith show. Ron Howard, who played Sheriff Andy Taylor's son Opie, left the show after its final season and made the decision not to join the spin-off series. After continuing to act for a little while after the series, he eventually got into directing and has directed a number of popular films, and even went on to win an Oscar for best director. Andy Griffith himself pulled the plug on his character even though the show was still highly popular when it ended. It was so popular, in fact, that a few cast members went on to star for 3 seasons in a spinoff series called Mayberry R.F.D.

The spin-off was also popular, and never fell below #10 in the ratings. Beloved character Aunt Bee, who portrayed a warm, kind, and motherly figure, was one of the notable characters that stayed in the spin-off. Frances Bavier, who played Aunt Bee, almost left the show but was eventually convinced by producers to reprise her role in the spin-off, as they explained to her how important her character is to the fans. The Andy Griffith show left behind a strong legacy and catapulted many of its cast members to fame. Let us know in the comments which iconic character is your favorite: Andy Taylor or Barney Fife?
