Did you know that Eric Fleming had to have his face reconstructed before coming to Hollywood and that he ran away from home at a young age and took up with the Chicago mob? Nowadays, the classic Western television series Rawhide is most often brought up as being the vehicle that introduced the world to Clint Eastwood. However, though Clint was an important supporting player in the series, he wasn’t the star of the show. Instead, the star of Rawhide was a man by the name of Eric Fleming. Eric was a man whose machismo would give Clint Eastwood a run for his money at any age. Sadly, it was Eric’s rugged machismo that ended up doing him in. The performer’s machismo was a burden even before he got into the entertainment industry. During his time in the Navy, he attempted a show of strength that left him greatly wounded.

Eric Fleming was born in California in the mid-1920s. He had an awkward childhood, and his father beat him because of it instead of showing him compassion. The beatings inspired Eric to run away from home around the age of 10. He hopped on a freight train headed to Chicago. In Chicago, he started running errands for the mob. Eric eventually wound up in the hospital due to his mob dealings, and the authorities contacted the boy’s mother. Eric returned to California with his mom, who had thankfully gotten divorced.

Back in California with his mother, Eric continued his coming of age in peace. As an adult, he joined the Navy. There, a tragic accident occurred when Eric attempted a show of strength that he couldn’t manage. Whether because of the beatings that he suffered from his father or because of his days in the mob, Eric always had a strong desire to prove to others that he was masculine. This habit caused a lot of bad things to happen to Eric over the course of his life and eventually killed him.
