Jan got her start in the entertainment industry in an unlikely way. At the age of 16, a surfer classmate talked Jan into ditching school for the first time. At the beach, two men working on an article for the burgeoning publication Newsweek approached the truant young woman. Jan’s photo ended up being featured on the cover of the magazine, giving the magazine its most popular issue so far and causing numerous agents to track the young woman down and begin offering her modeling work.

Thanks to the Newsweek cover, Jan spent the last two years of her high school career moonlighting as an actress in commercials. Her first role in a film came with When the Lilies Bloom, and she could be seen guest-starring on the hit series Starsky and Hutch shortly after that. In 1978, Jan was given the role of Bailey Quarters on WKRP in Cincinnati.

WKRP in Cincinnati came to an end in 1982, after which point Jan continued working on television as a guest star on various series. One series she guest-starred on was Hotel, which starred James Brolin. The two fell in love, and James ended up becoming Jan’s second husband. James fathered Jan’s first and hitherto only child, the aforementioned Molly, and Jan retired. Join Facts Verse as we take a look at why Jan Smithers disappeared after WKRP in Cincinnati.
