Gloria Swanson was born in Chicago, Illinois on March 27, 1899 and was raised in a military family that moved around quite a bit as her father was repeatedly assigned to different bases. She first achieved fame starring in dozens of films in the silent film era of the 1920s. For her work, she was nominated three times for Best Actress at the Academy Awards.
After taking a nearly two-decade break from Hollywood after the peak of her acting career, Swanson famously made a return to the world of cinema when she appeared in Billy Wilder's 1950 classic Sunset Boulevard. That performance earned her a Golden Globe and is widely regarded as one of her best roles.
While Gloria certainly had one heck of a professional career, her numerous attempts at love and marriage proved to be less successful.
