Richard Dawson was the first original host of Family Feud from its premiere in 1976 till 1985. He hosted the show again in 1994-1995, before essentially going into semi-retirement. The show was a huge hit and reached the height of popularity, becoming the number one daytime show and the number one syndicated show. It is still on to this day, and has had 6 hosts so far, with the most recent and longest-running host being Steve Harvey.

Family Feud made Richard Dawson a star, and he became immensely famous. His career reached new heights with Family Feud, but the show was not without its controversies behind the scenes. Kissing female contestants and clashing with producers were some of the reasons why executives hated Richard Dawson. He was known for having a flower on his suit, his habit of kissing contestants to calm their nerves and wish them luck, and engaging in witty banter on the show. He had a very unconventional style of hosting that was different from most of the other hosts on TV. While he was very charming, funny, and friendly, he also had a sarcastic and snarky streak that was showcased on the show.
Richard did not hold back when it came to expressing his thoughts and feelings to contestants, and if he didn't like a contestant, he did not make any effort to conceal that, unlike most hosts that try to be cordial with everyone. Funnily enough, Richard actually met his future wife on the show, and would go on to have a daughter with her. He stayed married to her until his death in 2012.
