Eartha Kitt was born Eartha Mae Keith on January 17, 1927, in South Carolina. By the time she died at the age of 81 in 2008, she was thought of as one of the greatest soul singers as well as a figure of controversy.

Her entrance to the world wasn’t as ideal as one would hope. Her mother was of Cherokee and African descent and had reportedly been raped by the son of the owner of a plantation – which is where Eartha Kitt was born. To this day, it’s not clear whether this cotton plantation was near the town of North or St. Matthews.
Somehow, in this dark environment, she discovered her talent for singing and for entertaining others. She attended a vocational high school where she learned various types of performing arts.
Eartha Kitt began her career singing in a troupe called the Katherine Dunham Company. She established her reputation as a talented vocalist and traveled around the United States as well as Europe. While on the continent, she also learned French and began singing songs in that language.
She also became known for her costumes and her unique style. Years later, as Eartha Kitt was growing as a star, other aspiring singers would emulate her style – most notably Diana Ross.
But she didn’t just stop at singing. Eartha Kitt was also a talented actress and she appeared in plays, television series, and in feature films. It seemed that Eartha Kitt was on an upward trajectory with her career and that she was unstoppable.
However, this certainly wouldn’t be the case. Eartha Kitt was a loved figure but also a hated one. She was as popular and mainstream as one could get but she also held controversial views that classified her as fringe – and as a potential enemy of the mainstream viewpoints and culture.
