Though Dusty Springfield went on to make history as a gay icon over the course of her career in popular music, she had mixed-up feelings about her sexuality as a result of traumatic childhood memories. Dusty’s family was religious, but this wasn’t the only thing that caused problems for the future star growing up. Both of Dusty’s parents were miserable for other reasons, and many of the future singer’s formative childhood memories consisted of them bickering violently.
As a result of her childhood trauma, Dusty escaped into fantasies that were inspired by the works of such popular recording artists as Billie Holiday. Pretty soon, teenage Dusty was dreaming of becoming a star herself. Of course, her religious authority figures balked at these dreams. Dusty persevered even though no one believed in her, and she eventually became one of the biggest names in popular music. However, her success didn’t last into her twilight years, during which she ate nothing but ice cream and cauliflower.
