Claude Akins has a filmography that seems to go on forever. He knew at a young age he wanted to leave his small town by becoming an actor. His first major role was in the hit film From Here to Eternity. He then grabbed a host of other films and TV spots.

His star began to burn even brighter when B.J. and the Bear came on TV. He was so captivating as Sherrif Lobo, the titular trucker’s nemesis, that they made a spinoff just for him. The Misadventures of Sherrif Lobo may not have succeeded, but it was important for his career. He lent his voice to safety ads and commercials after that before returning to major acting. He had a few more TV and film appearances before his health began to decline.
Claude developed stomach cancer. He needed surgery to take half of his stomach out to remove it. Complications after that surgery led to his death. Claude was such a prolific actor that you’ve almost certainly watched something he was in and loved it. Perhaps you were a fan of his Westerns. Maybe you liked the comedic exploits of BJ and the Bear. He was a man who was never afraid to work or shake your hand. That should get an actor recognition in Hollywood, but it didn’t for Claude. He felt like an outsider and the best-paid unknown in the business. His imposing figure got him cast as the villain, but he was smart, kind, and deserved more attention from the elites.
