Jack Nance was a unique actor – the likes of whom we seldom get to see. He started his career as a theatre actor, touring the country as a child before graduating to the American Conservatory Theater. While acting in theater in Philadelphia he met filmmaker David Lynch and the rest was history.
His film career began in the early 1970s but became a household name when he was cast in the lead role in David Lynch's feature debut film Eraserhead which was released in 1977. The film made Jack Nance a star among fans of “midnight movies” which had become popular at the time.
This began a lifelong collaboration with David Lynch that spanned several films as well as the popular TV series Twin Peaks. He also had a career in independent films, mainstream films, a couple B-movies, and even one adult film! He played some of the most unusual and often, bizarre characters we’ve ever seen in American cinema.
But behind this unique career trajectory, Jack Nance sadly had a troubled personal life. His first marriage ended in divorce as a result of his alcoholism. This was something that would stay with him for most of his adult life.
His second wife tragically took her own life, and this haunted Jack until his own death in 1996. The events surrounding his own death remain a mystery – and details of what exactly happened and whether it actually happened remain contentious.
