Jim Bakker is one of the most famous televangelists in history, thanks to both his immense success in the industry and the numerous controversies that caused his career to come to an end for a period of time in the 1990s. The religious leader first rose to prominence alongside his wife, Tammy Faye, on Pat Robertson’s Christian Broadcasting Network, or CBN. The couple hosted a children’s variety show on the network before being given their own talk show that was meant to mimic mainstream late night series. That talk show was The 700 Club, and it became a massive hit.

At the time that Jim and Tammy Faye had been hired by Pat Robertson, his television network was relatively unknown. By the time the couple left the network in the early 1970s, it had become a force to be reckoned with thanks to their creative input. Jim and Tammy Faye went on to create a television network of their own, the PTL Satellite Network. That network was used to broadcast a clone of The 700 Club that Jim and Tammy Faye called The PTL Club.
The PTL Club was an immediate success. At the height of the program’s popularity, the Bakkers were said to have been pulling in over a million dollars in donations per week. With the money, Jim built Heritage USA. Heritage USA was an amusement park that also functioned as the production studio where Jim and Tammy Faye filmed their shows.
Heritage USA opened in 1978, and arguably marked Jim and Tammy Faye’s greatest achievement. A little over a decade later, the amusement park would be forced to close it’s doors as the couple’s entire enterprise came crashing down due to numerous scandals.
