Although Christie never had any intention of becoming a model, she found herself having a hard time saying no when the glamorous lifestyle came calling for her. Over the course of the 1970s, Christie came to grace the cover of nearly every notable magazine publication available on newsstands. With her 1979 appearance on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, Christie Brinkley became a household name. She appeared on the cover of the next two issues, as well. In addition to her magazine appearances, Christie broadened her horizons in the entertainment industry over the course of the 1980s by taking on some acting roles, such as in National Lampoon’s Vacation.
It was during the filming of National Lampoon’s Vacation that Christie Brinkley met second husband Billy Joel. During their marriage, Christie took a step back from modeling and began painting again. She was the artist that painted the cover of Billy Joel’s 1993 album River of Dreams. The two divorced in 1994 after having one child together.
The same year that Christie Brinkley divorced Billy Joel, she got in a serious helicopter crash in Colorado while on a ski trip. Though she survived, Christie experienced pain for many years afterward until just recently undergoing a full hip replacement in 2020. In addition to continuing to work as a model and actress herself, Christie is also helping her daughter find her own footing in the modeling industry.
