Regardless, one can’t deny the impact that Barbara Stanwyck has had on American cinema and television. She was an actress who wasn’t afraid to play controversial characters in controversial films. She was also an icon of female empowerment and had a rich career on stage, in film, and on television.
But her life and career weren’t without their struggles. Barbara Stanwyck had to grow up quickly, losing her mother at a young age and then having her father abandoned the family. She never became a victim of her circumstances and worked hard to succeed in show business.
She began her career as a dancer on stage and had a few acting roles. She moved to Hollywood in the 1930s and persuaded director Frank Capra to cast her in one of his films. Her performances were lauded. But so was her incredible beauty.
It was clear that she was destined for Hollywood stardom. Yet, she didn’t do roles that were typical of leading ladies at the time. She played the mischievous Jean in The Lady Eve and the devious Phyllis Dietrechson in Double Indemnity.
Some of her early work even caused such a stir, that the Hays Code was established. This was to censor any objectionable content and create strict guidelines for Hollywood films. This never stopped Barbara Stanwyck from being daring with her choice of roles.
As she aged, she moved her focus to television. On the small screen, Barbara Stanwyck made as much of an impact as she did on the big screen. She won 3 Emmy Awards for her performances in The Barbara Stanwyck Show, The Big Valley, and The Thorn Birds.
