When Here’s Lucy came to an end after six seasons, Lucille Ball had developed a reputation as the entertainer who had the longest success streak in primetime television history. The actress had risen to prominence two decades earlier after creating and starring on the seminal sitcom I Love Lucy. Lucille created the show with her then-husband, Desi Arnaz.

After I Love Lucy came to an end, Lucille eventually created another television show called The Lucy Show that came on the air in 1962. After The Lucy Show ended, she created a third series by the name of Here’s Lucy. Here’s Lucy’s ratings may not have been as impressive as Lucille’s first sitcom, but they were still nothing to balk at.

Despite the fact that Lucille likely could’ve continued acting on primetime television forever if she’d so chosen, she eventually decided to call it a day. Lucille had been flirting with the idea of quitting weekly primetime television around the time of Here’s Lucy’s fifth season, though she was talked into doing just one more.

One of the reasons that Lucille wanted to quit Here’s Lucy was because she wanted to focus more on serious film work. She had recently performed in the feature Mame and was due to promote it around the time that Here’s Lucy came to an end. Although Lucille had high hopes for the film, it didn’t end up turning out quite as successful as she had planned.

Although Here’s Lucy has never been quite as popular as I Love Lucy, the show has always had it’s fans. It’s notable for many things, including its plethora of guest stars and the fact that it features Lucille’s real-life children playing her character’s kids. Still, Lucille felt that she’d had enough after six seasons. Join Facts Verse as we finally understand why Here’s Lucy was canceled.
