If you grew up in the 1970s or 1980s, you would have seen David Lee Roth's face everywhere in pop culture. He was one of the most recognizable lead singers of the era, thanks to the popularity of Van Halen. And he was a consummate showman, taking every opportunity to boost the band's popularity. David Lee Roth got started in the music business in his late teens, playing solo shows and with an R&B group called the Red Ball Jets. But landing the lead singer gig with Van Halen made him a household name. Van Halen was famous for Eddie’s guitar playing, but Roth was just as instrumental in the band's success.

He would release six albums with the original Van Halen lineup, but the conflict between him and the rest of the band — especially Eddie — led to their parting ways in 1984. David Lee Roth went on to have a successful solo career over the next decade, releasing several highly successful albums of his own. By the mid-1990s, hard rock wasn't doing as well, and Roth pivoted once again, creating a Vegas lounge act featuring a brass band and exotic dancers. There was a short-lived reunion with Van Halen in 1996, but it wouldn't truly happen for another decade. In 2007, David Lee Roth reunited with the band. They had their most successful tour to date and went on to release a new album in 2012. Eddie Van Halen’s death in 2020 meant the end of the band, and David Lee Roth recently announced his own retirement from performing.
