The Baby Boomer generation was born between 1946 and 1964, and experienced significant technological advancements and cultural changes. However, many skills once considered essential have become obsolete. Some of these skills include typing on a phone keypad, memorizing phone numbers, using phonebooks, sewing at home, posting seasonal cards, reading a map, writing in cursive, using library card catalogs, changing car oil, balancing a checkbook, using a fax machine, getting up to change the TV channel, and using a typewriter.

As technology continues to advance, new skills emerge, and traditional skills become less relevant. For instance, voice-to-text technology and virtual keyboards have replaced typing on a phone keypad. Smartphones have eliminated the need to memorize phone numbers and consult phonebooks, while online search engines have replaced the need for library card catalogs. Sewing and writing in cursive have transitioned from necessities to hobbies. Email and social media have largely replaced sending seasonal cards and using fax machines. GPS systems have made paper maps obsolete, and advances in automotive technology have reduced the need for changing car oil and balancing checkbooks. Before remote controls, TV viewers had to physically get up and change the channel. This wasn't such a big deal when there were only a few channels to choose from, but as the number of channels grew, so did the number of trips to the TV set. Computers and mobile devices have replaced the typewriter.

While these skills may no longer be necessary, they hold historical significance and remind us of a time when people relied on their abilities to navigate daily life. In some cases, these skills fostered focus, intention, patience, and financial responsibility, qualities that can still be appreciated and valued today.

Be sure to watch this video to the very end to discover some Baby Boomer skills which are of little or no use in modern times.
