If you’re a fan of movies, then you like to get fully immersed in the worlds they create. And for pieces that aren’t set in the modern day, that means you are taken to a time in the past, often many years ago. And for the most part, the costume departments on these period pieces do an amazing job of putting their actors and actresses in outfits that would have been worn in the era of the particular movie. But, like any department on a movie, the costume department is human. And that means they make mistakes.

Sometimes these are huge mistakes, like one movie that has a ton of characters in outfits that don't actually appear until 300 years after the movie takes place. And other times they are so subtle that only people who are really watching for them will catch them. We’re talking about specific models of watches that weren’t quite out yet when the movie takes place. Or jean shorts that technically didn’t come into vogue until later.
Regardless of the mistake, it can seriously throw the viewer off. Especially if it comes during a particularly important or heart-wrenching scene. Take the case of Raiders of the Lost Ark. While this isn’t a particularly heart-wrenching movie, there’s a great scene where Indiana Jones is lamenting the loss of his love. But it’s undercut by an extra who walks by in a decidedly incorrect outfit for Cairo in 1930.
