Tropes, tropes, tropes, or shall we say, Marcia, Marcia, Marcia. A television trope is a plot device or theme used to advance the show's narrative. Tropes are typically common and often overused. Think of them as cliches, but on a slightly larger scale. A ton of television series has employed tropes to help keep the audience's attention in ways that feel both familiar and easy to digest.

Examples of a few famous TV tropes are 'boy meets girl', the reluctant hero, and the dreaded anticlimactic 'it was all just a dream' trope.
As far as trope-heavy television series go, Sherwood Schwartz's The Brady Bunch was especially guilty of overusing these devices. The series ran on ABC from September 26, 1969 to March 8, 1974. In that half-decade that it was on the air, The Brady Bunch used just about every trope in the book. In fact, you could probably even write a book about just how many television tropes Schwartz decided to run with.
