Well, as happens in the entertainment industry, not every child of a successful parent is successful themselves. In this video, we’re taking a look at some spinoffs from shows that were huge cultural touchstones and rating monsters that were canceled almost as soon as they were put on the air. It’s strange to think that by taking characters from a successful show and giving them a focus with their own stories and plots, a show would be doomed.
After all, these characters have already been vetted thoroughly be being parts of hugely successful sitcoms. So you’d think that audiences would eat up the chance to watch them in their own stories and explore their own lives. And sometimes that’s true. That’s why there have been so many spinoffs. It’s a strategy by networks that has certainly paid off in many instances. But for every successful spinoff, there’s one that completely failed. And the odd thing is that it’s not always simply a matter of poor ratings. For example, two shows that we’re looking at – Gloria, and Phyllis – were actually doing quite well when they were canceled.
Phyllis even garnered its lead, Chloris Leachman, a Golden Globe award for Best Actor. And yet deaths in the cast meant that the show was doomed. And with Gloria, infighting and production issues led to its demise. Regardless, these are shows that made their best effort to spin off from a successful show but ultimately failed miserably.
