The show was one of the funniest sitcoms of the 1970s. It was also one of the many great sitcoms that reflected the experiences of black Americans and gave opportunities to many talented actors and actresses.
Mabel King played Mabel “Mama” Thomas who was the stern and loving mother of Raj and Dee. Mabel King began her career as a singer before transitioning to acting. She had a great career in both film and television. Sadly, she suffered from serious health problems later in life.
Fred Berry became a household name when he joined the What’s Happening!! cast. He played Rerun and became a huge star because of his role. But he struggled with fame and also had many health problems. His character has become one of the most recognizable characters in the history of American sitcoms.
Shirley Hemphill was a successful stand-up comedian who became a huge star when she joined the What’s Happening!! cast as waitress Shirley Wilson. She remembered the show fondly throughout her life. Sadly, she suffered from health issues and didn’t find major roles outside of the show.
The show was based on the film Cooley High written by Eric Monte. Though he helped create some of the best TV shows and most memorable characters of the 1970s, he often didn’t get the credit he deserved. He struggled for much of his career after the 1970s and is often looked at as an unsung hero in show business.
The show also starred Thalmus Rasulala, Ernest Thomas, Haywood Nelson, and Danielle Spencer.
