Shortly after making history with her role in The Toll of the Sea, Anna May Wong was set to take charge of her own production company, dubbed Anna May Wong Productions. Anna’s vision for the company was to create progressive Asian-American pictures for her to star in. Sadly, her deal for the company fell through, and Anna was forced to continue trying to find work in the established Hollywood system.
Anna’s deal for her own production company fell through in 1924, though she received what has come to be known as her breakout role later that same year. While Anna’s role in 1924’s The Thief of Bagdad may have been her breakout role, it also caused her to be typecast over the course of her remaining career in a way that Anna felt negatively reflected upon her Chinese heritage. Anna fought many battles against racism over the course of her career and had several small victories. However, she never quite achieved the stardom that she deserved due to racism in the industry.
