He grew up in Sherman Oaks, California, and attended the University of Southern California on a basketball scholarship. He studied business administration but dropped out to pursue acting.

Selleck began his acting career with small roles in TV shows and commercials. He got his big break when he was cast as Thomas Magnum, a Hawaii-based private investigator, on Magnum, P.I., which ran from 1980 to 1988. The show was a huge success and earned him five Emmy nominations and one win for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
Selleck also starred in several movies during and after Magnum, P.I., such as Three Men and a Baby, Quigley Down Under, Mr. Baseball, In & Out, The Love Letter, and more. He also appeared on other TV shows like Friends (as Monica’s boyfriend Richard), Las Vegas (as casino owner A.J. Cooper), Jesse Stone (as a police chief), Blue Bloods (as NYPD commissioner Frank Reagan), among others.
