After eight seasons of Magnum P.I., Tom Selleck had become disenchanted with several aspects of portraying the show’s titular character. For one thing, Tom felt that he was creatively stagnating in the role and no longer felt quite as in love with the art of acting as he had once been. For another thing, Tom had become disenchanted with the entertainment industry in general and had come to have a decidedly negative view of the superficialities that were inherently involved in living with the level of fame that he had achieved.
Tom initially quit Magnum P.I. under the assumption that he needed to find more fulfilling work elsewhere. However, he went on to find that there was no work that he deemed fulfilling anywhere in Hollywood.
