Some of the many popular pieces of media during the 1950s that introduced iconic characters played by child actors included the sitcom Leave It to Beaver, as well as the Walt Disney feature film Swiss Family Robinson. Leave It to Beaver featured child actors Tony Dow and Jerry Mathers. Jerry played the titular character of Theodore “Beaver” Cleaver, while Tony Dow played his character’s brother, Wally. Both actors are still currently around, though fans that only remember them from their work on that seminal series would certainly have a hard time picking them out!
Tommy Kirk appeared in Disney’s Swiss Family Robinson, and also starred in Old Yeller. A bout of controversy in the 1960s put the young actor’s career in the entertainment industry to an end, and he spent the later years of his life operating a carpet cleaning business before his recent death. Many other stars featured in this video worked with Disney in some capacity, with some of them having been Mouseketeers featured on The Mickey Mouse Club.
Some of the child stars featured in this video went on to do things outside of the entertainment industry after growing up, while others decided to stick around in some capacity. Kevin Corcoran started out as a child actor with Disney before going to college and becoming a producer at the company. Meanwhile, Jay North played the titular character on the beloved sitcom Dennis the Menace but has achieved success in his adult years as a voice actor.
