One of the best parts of their relationship is that they made it seem normal for a husband and wife to fight. Ralph’s threats were empty, and that’s what made it okay to laugh at them. They became such a beloved couple that fans sent in decor for their dingy apartment. The humor of The Honeymooners began with Jackie Gleason’s history in sketch comedy. He knew how to get an audience laughing. He’d ad-lib a comment if part of a prop accidentally fell apart to make it seem like part of the show. Jackie’s history made him hate dress rehearsals. He wanted to keep the jokes new and fresh, but being unprepared caused him to forget the lines. The rest of the cast worked with him to help everything run smoothly despite rumors that they didn’t always get along.

Fans loved the formula of Ralph trying and failing to make a quick buck. A few of his schemes, such as 3D TV and low-fat pizza, would have been a success today. Audrey Meadows always played Alice with intelligence and grace, and she perhaps pulled the best money-making scheme of all. Her lawyer brothers made sure she got residuals from all Honeymooners re-runs. That was enough to keep her sitting comfortably for years.

The show only ran for 39 episodes before it was considered for cancellation. Instead of letting it stagnate, Jackie quit. The Honeymooners was so popular that it inspired copycats. The Flinstones were so similar that Jackie almost took the creators to court. It also had prestigious fans like Carey Grant.
