In a tell-all book about Belushi’s death, author Shawn Levy documented what went down in the week and hours leading up to Belushi’s death. It’s a tragic tale of a comedic genius whose light shined bright but was snuffed out far before his time. Belushi had been depressed in the weeks leading up to his death, in no small part because of the failures of his last two movies.
As he felt his career was getting off track, he became more and more depressed. This led him to seek comfort in the vices of drugs, alcohol, and women. And a mixture of cocaine and heroin ultimately led him to overdose and die in his Chateau Marmont bungalow. We talk about how people were aware of Belushi’s issues, and some even tried to help. But there was ultimately not a lot that could be done, since Belushi was on a self-destructive path. But before his death, his friends Robert De Niro and Robin Williams checked in on his separately. And while both had good intentions, it was likely not that helpful that they joined him in doing cocaine that night.
While Belushi was alive when both of them left, he continued to take drugs until his system finally gave out.
