He began as a Western star and racked up an impressive list of credits. He’s acted in several genres, including comedy, action, and more. Clint earned awards for both acting and directing. He even made history by being the oldest recipient of Best Director for Million Dollar Baby at the age of 74. His unique style sets him apart from other directors. He creates a hospitable environment with a reasonable schedule, but he also expects efficiency. He rarely allows more than 1 or 2 takes, a habit he learned from his days on Rawhide.
These methods haven’t always earned him friends. Spike Lee criticized his lack of diversity in Letters from Iwo Jima and Flags of Our Fathers. They argued back and forth before eventually reconciling. His feud with Michael Moore was a bit more serious. He allegedly responded to his fellow director’s claims of glorifying snipers in American Sniper by threatening to shoot him if he ever came into his home. The good news for Clint is that he’s in powerful company. Tim Burton and Kevin Smith fought over Batman, James Cameron and Patty Jenkins couldn’t agree on whether Wonder Woman was feminist enough, and Spike Lee also criticized Quentin Tarantino and Tyler Perry.
He should also consider himself lucky that he hasn’t faced the wrath of directors who seem to criticize everyone, even if they haven’t met them. Jacque Rivette was even bold enough to take aim at James Cameron and Steven Spielberg.
