Join Facts Verse as we take a look back at some of the episodes that cast members and fans have pointed to as being some of the best of the Award-winning series' prolific run. And while you're watching, try to think of what some of your favorite episodes are.
M*A*S*H aired on CBS for 11 critically acclaimed seasons. It was developed by producer Larry Gelbert, who was also known for co-writing the Broadway musicals City of Angels and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.
Based on a 1968 book titled MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors, authored by Richard Hooker, M*A*S*H was originally made into a feature film that hit theaters in 1970. After being well-received by critics and audiences alike, it was then adapted into a television series.
In addition to its expertly written scripts, what made M*A*S*H stand really out was its incredible ensemble cast and their on-screen chemistry. Actors that really shined on the series were Alan Alda, Wayne Rogers, McLean Stevenson, Loretta Swit, Larry Linville, and Gary Burghoff, among others.
The plot of M*A*S*H revolved around the medical staff and personnel of the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital – a unit that was situated just miles from the North Korean town of Ujeongbu. While the show was presented initially as a sitcom, it eventually evolved into a comedy-drama hybrid of sorts – which makes sense considering the seriousness of its subject material. In fact, it's been said that M*A*S*H helped coin the expression “dramedy”.
War is a mighty difficult thing to make light of, but the members of the 4077th attempted to keep morale elevated through trial and tribulation by humor and camaraderie, and the result of that was one of the finest television shows of all time.
For decades now, fans of the series have been debating what its best episodes are. Over the years, some of the show's cast members have revealed what some of their favorites were. One of the bonus features included on the “Martini's and Medicine” Complete Series Collection boxset was a ten-minute video titled “My Favorite M*A*S*H” in which cast members revealed their favorite episodes of the groundbreaking series.
In this video, we'll see what some of M*A*S*H”s cast members say are their favorite episodes. We'll also take a look at a few episodes that remain fan favorites.
