Is there a character you would remove from a film if you could? Making a fully-fledged human in a film is difficult, and many are so useless that they barely change the plot at all.

Certain characters are “blink-and-you’ll-miss-them.” They show up for such a short time then leave or die, but it feels more like an annoyance than a fun cameo. That’s true for Eddie in Rocky Horror Picture Show and Dick Halloran in The Shining. Superhero films suffer from this because of their large ensembles. Night Wing in Watchman and Storm from X-Men have such terrible, unmemorable scenes that they should have been cut from the team.
Action films need extras running around in terror to give their scene weight. Trying to turn them into full characters isn’t a wise idea. Cindy from Commando, Private Hudgson from Aliens, and Herman Ferguson from Judge Dredd are all examples of what happens when a character’s one emotion is fear. A few characters that are supposed to be heroic either help the villains or do nothing to stop them. Corporal Upham lets his fellow soldiers get stabbed, and C-3PO leads the heroes of Star Wars into a field of Ewoks.
Love interests that aren’t given enough time often end up boring and useless. A few examples of this common mistake include Fabien from Pulp Fiction and Kay from The Godfather. Characters can also add nothing to a film but a few offensive, stereotypical scenes. Skids and Mudflap are two Transformers that only serve to deliver cringe-worthy “downhome” lines. Fabrizo in Titanic’s Italian accent isn’t fooling anyone, making every scene with him feel forced.
