Did you know that the late actress Barbara Colby was married to Ethel Merman’s son and that her murder at an all-too-young age remains unsolved to this day? Barbara Colby was a stage and television actress that was born in New York City but raised in New Orleans. It was during the young woman’s high school years that she first got a taste for acting, joining a community theater troupe in New Orleans’ French Quarter. After high school, Barbara was invited back to New York City to attend the prestigious Bard College on scholarship. With her sights set on Broadway, Barbara gladly accepted the opportunity.

Following a semester abroad in France, Barbara came back to New York City and eventually made her Broadway debut in the mid-1960s. Following her debut, Barbara continued acting on Broadway before beginning to receive job offers for roles on television. Believing it might be the right thing for her career, Barbara accepted these television roles. After divorcing her first and only husband, whom she shared a permanent residence in New York City, Barbara decided that she wanted a change of scenery. She moved to California permanently and continued acting there.
Barbara was finding quite a bit of success on television. Her first appearance came on the series Columbo, but her big break came when she was given a guest-starring role on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Barbara’s deadpan comedic performance as a prostitute sharing a cell with Mary left a huge impression on the audience, and Barbara was subsequently invited back to reprise her role in another episode. Later, Barbara was invited to have a role as a main cast member on the spin-off series Phyllis. Sadly, Barbara would only manage to film three episodes of Phyllis before her murder.
